CHAPTER 25

EMMA

Nothing good ever came from the opener, ‘We need to talk,’ and by the look on Levi’s face, this was no exception. If he was about to dump my ass, the kiss he’d just planted on my lips and the fact that I was still wrapped around his body seemed a bit of a dick move.

Then he started to walk—like carrying the extra weight of my body was nothing—and sat down on one of my couches, the one not already occupied by Luke and Tess. Also, if he was about to break up with me, I didn’t really want an audience. I’d, of course, tell Tess all the gory details anyway, but I definitely didn’t want her there for it.

He moved me over so I was seated next to him, positioning me so I could see him, Tess, and Luke.

“Is… everything all right?” I finally managed to squeak out. My gaze flitted between the three of them and I watched on as they looked between themselves. It was clear Tess and Luke weren’t planning on going anywhere, which I found really… weird.

“How about the three of you get your shit together, and then one of you tells me what the hell is going on.” I turned my face to Levi. “If you’re going to break up with me, I find it pretty fucking weird you need Tess and Luke here for it, but if that’s what this is, then I’d rather you just rip the band-aid off.”

Levi jerked his head back—like, actually recoiled. Then his meaty hands cupped my face as he pressed a gentle kiss to my lips. “That’s not what this is, sweetheart. You can’t get rid of me that easily,” he said soothingly. Relief washed over my body and I let out a breath I hadn’t realised I’d been holding. In that moment, it dawned on me I’d grown more attached to him than I’d thought.

“Okay,” I said, shuffling over to grab the margarita from the coffee table before taking a big gulp. The taste of tequila and lime flooded my tastebuds. I was in definite need of alcohol to take the edge off my frayed nerves. Sean’s invasion of my personal space had affected me more than I was letting on—I gingerly rubbed at my throat. “So, which of you is going to do the honours? Who’s filling me in?” I pushed.

Luke held his hands up in the air, seemingly bowing out of the task, which left Levi and Tess. I looked between the two of them. Tess worried her lip and her breathing had kicked up a notch, but Levi was stoic. Finally, after a moment of silence, he spoke.

“Emma, do you know much about the Bible?”

Oh shit, is this some sort of religious intervention? Am I about to be born again? I knew enough about God, Heaven, Hell, and good versus evil. I knew that a lot of bad shit had been undertaken all in the name of one god or another, and that it often made people do crazy things.
